Grinding, rubbing noise at idle

2014 XTZ 1000, new in 2017 with less than 300 total miles. Was out hauling some carboard boxes, and went around my house in some deep snow. Had it in low range and diff lock. Worked it a little getting through the snow for about 10 minutes, then back to hauling in 4wd, high range, no lock. Started to hear a nasty grinding, rubbing noise from the engine area. I shut it off. Started back up and tried to get to garage, each time I put it in gear, forward or reverse would die out. Towed to garage and took clutch cover off, clutches all looked great. Started it up, noise was there at idle, but went away when I revved up the motor. Put in gear, and tried to give it gas to move, loud clunk and died. Same in reverse. Noise sounds like from back of motor behind secondary clutch. Jacked up rear wheels, turned by hand fine. Put back in gear with jacked up, revved up motor and wheels turned just fine in both forward and reverse! So, nasty noise at idle, goes away revved up a bit in neutral, clunks and dies with wheels on the ground when I put in gear and try to move, but wheels turn fine in gear jacked up. What can the problem be?

Sounds like the one way clutch in the primary housing.

Hope so, that would be easy enough to get to as it's already stripped down with clutch cover off. Noise sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine though, although noise can travel through a motor and be deceptive. One way clutch or wet clutch I can get to, if in the gear section, Cat Country service manual shows a bottom engine cover that could come off, but appears I'd have to pull the whole motor for that.

I agree on the oneway bearing as the culprit! I removed mine about 4 years ago and never looked back! Slight loss of engine braking, but no big deal! You can download a free service manual at Country Cat if you don't already have one. Sounds like yo do! The gears are pretty durable in these things!

Finally ready to tackle this, got sidetracked on some other projects. If I remove the one way bearing, do I need to replace it with some kind of spacer? All the info I see shows it as a ring on the outside of the wet clutch.

Don't understand the response???? If I remove the one way clutch, do I just toss it, or do I need a spacer or something to replace it? Thanks!

Just toss it, no other parts needed. The only thing the one way does is offer engine braking, without the clutch engine braking is limited below 10 mph. I've never found that to be an issue. Machine will be somewhat quieter!
