Is this normal? is there a way to take the play out of it without affecting the position detents?

Check jam nuts to be sure they are tight then figure out where the play is.

Welcome from Reed City, MI.
I'd check the mounting blocks on the shifter for wear. They are a non metallic part. Next would be the shifter spring, then linkage, or cable.
